This has been helpful, one comment about storing food, if you live alone and get ill, having a store of food really helps, even if you have to store it in unconvential places eg spare wardrobe. The up side these places are dark and food lasts longer in darker places. Sometimes people who have families, extended families, their own transport, and or a good friendship support network forget about or dont even realise how hard it is to cope when ill, alone with no transport or few support networks. This is your own insurance in these circumstances.

I have "identity clutter" which is an overstaffed concert/band t-shirt drawer. Before kids I'd go to concerts and festivals and have bands sign the t-shirts. I don't want to throw them away in case I ever go back to attending concerts. Should I try to display them on the wall? It will probably take a looot of the wall space.

Something that the pandemic should have taught us is how fragile our way of living is. Hoarding isn't the answer, but being prepared is my way of life! I live in Houston where there are hurricanes and my husband got laid off during thr pandemic and we've always been fine due to my emergency preparedness. Rotating regularly is the answer, not minimalism. I can't tell you how many people we've been able to help during power outages, freezes, disasters because we live with a prepared mindset.

The pest solution if you run out of toilet paper is to use water to clean and then dry it with a piece of clothes if you want, so you pour water in one hand and clean with the other hand 😁 and then don’t forget to wash your hands very good with soap. You can use a small garden watering can for that purpose it works the best or even a plastic water bottle. This is what they do in Middle East 😊 🥰💕

I don’t agree with not buying certain things in bulk. I am guilty of having water/paper towels where they don’t belong but it’s not just about saving money for me but saving time, and the more times I have to go to buy water, I end up buying $400 dollars more worth of stuff that I probably don’t need nor have room for.

Grocery prices are definitely higher. That isn't the only factor in grocery bills being so much higher though. People are eating at home more. I've noticed anecdotally that there are a lot more convenience items based on restaraunt brands, probably because people are buying more groceries, idk. In anycase, I quit restaurants and my grocery bill went way up, but I spend a lot less on food overall.

Yes, I know this is a late comment 🙂 I love my kitchen aid, but I also got it at an auction for a fraction of the price. I do make cookies with my mom every Christmas (about 35-40 dozen) and I also make cookies and bread about twice a month. About the disney trip - my mom and aunt traded our summer time share for a disney trip (still cost them about $500) and took my brother and cousin (8 & 6) and neither one remembers it. My mom complained about the price the whole time and that was with them saving money on driving versus flying and staying at a cheaper hotel versus the disney ones. I did go in highschool (20+ years ago) and that was expensive for that time, but I remember it and I LOVED it.

And--I totally agree about community college! I and both of my sons went to community college first. I have been teaching 19 years, and both my sons graduated from four year universities in finance--easily transferring from junior college. My older son has a masters in taxation and is completing his CPA exams, the younger is working in accounting. I don't understand why so many people find it important to overspend for college.

Hi! I am not in Texas, but in California we also are required to pay into our pension about 9 percent--so that money is automatically set aside, union dues are about 150 a month--which most teachers pay, and we do have to pay state tax, so our take home would be less.

If you're buying a used car, you need to budget for repairs/maintenance...oil changes, new tires, unexpected (but really...this should be expected) odd stuff...maybe a bit more toward the purchase of a different car a few years down the road. I would set aside at least $50 for car maintenance...another $50 savings toward a future vehicle would also be prudent. Also, where do you put personal care stuff? Most people are going to need a professional hair cut ($25 for cut and tip at a place like Great Clips) every six weeks or so. Shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper, fem hygiene products, makeup, etc. If your apartment has a washer/dryer, you will need laundry products. If you don't have the W/D, using a laundromat adds up, too. At least $50 a month, to prevent looking bad and smelling worse. You've got some healthcare...but what if a person has prescriptions, they need regularly? Dental care? Eye exams? Contact lenses? New glasses? Again, at least $50 per month. Holidays...gifts for family and friends for birthdays and whatever celebrations your culture celebrates. Another $50 a month for that. So...maybe another $200-$300 per month needs to be allotted for the sake of day-to-day stuff that adds up over time.
